Sunbird Farm 2007 – 2010: Elmarie Roberts & Marty Snow
The farm started in the growing season of 2007 on a designated one acre area of Haliburton Farm. For four successful years the farm grew a balance of quality certified organic vegetables, herbs, berries, straw, edible flowers, and magnificent cut flowers. Stewardship, enhancement of the previously unattended soil, and provision of a sanctuary for the creatures here, were vital values of the farm.
Goals and accomplishments included being part of a growing movement to secure a supply of food for Vancouver Island. Activities included the importance and viability of protecting agricultural land, growing food, flowers and plantstarts and selling these at the farm’s own farm stand and at farmers markets, offering farm tours, assisting in hosting meetings and activities at the farm centre for professional growers and the community, and promoting other organic farmers.
Adjacent to the farm is a wetland as well as one of Victoria’s reservoirs. The entire land sits on top of an aquifer… so many reasons to adopt stewardship here. Rock piles, mason bee boxes and bird boxes on the property will continue to attract beneficial creatures to the area. Over the years a significant increase in birds of prey and other birds, pacific chorus frogs and bees visiting the many flowers grown here have been recorded. There is much gratitude for the privilege to have been stewards of this land.
